The Instructional Media Lab

Come to the Instructional Media Lab on the 7th floor of the W.E.B. Du Bois Library to get help with your instructional technology needs from some of the most knowledgeable (and patient) people you will ever meet.

Appointments are available in up to 2-hour blocks most weekdays. Drop-ins are welcome on a space-available basis.

Help Using Computer-Equipped Teaching Spaces

Computer Classrooms

IT Computer Classrooms operates 9 teaching spaces for instructors using computer technology in their coursework. Classrooms are configured to match a variety of teaching styles. An extensive collection of software is available, and instructors can request that specialized software be installed.

Note: Team Based Learning Classrooms must be reserved through the Office of the University Registrar.

Help with Instructional Software Development (and OWL)

Enterprise Systems & Development

Enterprise Systems & Development (ESD) is a campus service organization dedicated to the design, development and deployment of instructional technology. ESD builds collaborations with UMass faculty and external institutions and community groups, and uses tools and expertise developed in more than a decade of technology research to serve University departments as well as the state’s K-12 schools.

ESD is responsible for the development and support of the OWL Online Homework System, used by thousands of students at UMass and many more through its license to Cengage Learning. OWL is a comprehensive, web-based, homework system which can be used for distance learning courses or for extending curriculum of locally taught courses.  Instructors and students interact with the system using any of the standard web browsers available today.

Help Making Video, Audio, Animation, and 3D Objects (Students Too!)

The Digital Media Lab

The Digital Media Lab on the 3rd floor of the W.E.B. Du Bois Library is a multimedia and 3D print production space designed to support students working on video, audio, animation and 3D modeling.

Students can check-out AV equipment and receive individual instruction as needed.

Meet Your Academic Liason

The Library’s Academic Liaison Program provides each department or program on campus with a designated liaison librarian who serves as the first point of contact for any library-related questions or services.

SPIRE, the UMass Amherst Student Information System, provides self-service for instructors to access class rosters, create class email lists, request learning management system courses, set up wireless guest accounts, and earn a security certificate to get access to Photo Rosters.
