In 2016-2017, I was awarded a Blended Learning Initiative Grant by the Five College Consortium, supported by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. The pilot project was my Fall 2016 undergraduate seminar on eighteenth- to early twentieth-century European and American sculpture, in which I offered my students the tools and technical support to research, analyze, and present in a digital publication format a group of sculptures in the collection of the Mount Holyoke College Art Museum. One of the lessons I drew from this pilot project was a tension between covering the course curriculum itself with giving students in-class trainings in digital technological literacy in the course of a single semester. I look forward to participating in the 2018 Winter Innovate@ Symposium to find solutions to this issue. I am also interested in learning more about digital pedagogical tools that will enable me to induce deep learning and creative thinking in my students as they reflect on a question that has become key to the use of digital media for art historians and museum professionals in recent years: what sort of new frontiers are offered by digital technologies to mediate the real-life, embodied viewing experiences of artworks made in conventional media, such as sculptures and paintings?
