Janice Irvine is a sociologist at the University of Massachusetts. She has worked as an activist and scholar in the area of Sexuality Studies for forty years. My goal is to develop the skills necessary to introduce a digital project into my course. At the moment, I am considering ArcGis Story Maps, largely because I have familiarity with that platform, and also because the student assignment involves creating a social map. But I am hoping to learn about other options and may decide to change this plan. My motivations for introducing a digital project into the course are multiple: digital projects, in some respects, are the wave of the future; a digital assignment offers students the opportunity to develop a new and tangible technological skill; and digital projects engage students in a different way than writing papers. I introduced the option for students to use Story Maps in my course this semester and some of them did so, producing projects that were smart, engaging, and fun. I hope during the Innovate sessions to more fully develop ways to introduce and support students throughout this process.
